Ingredients We Use
We believe good soap begins with good ingredients. Each bar is made using carefully chosen oils, butters and botanicals, selected for their skin-conditioning properties and gentle cleansing.
Below are some of the key ingredients used in our soaps and other products.
Plant Oils and Butters
Olive Oil
Olive oil forms the foundation of many of our soaps. It creates a gentle, mild bar that is known for its conditioning qualities and creamy lather.
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil helps create a rich lather and contributes to the cleansing properties of the soap.
Shea Butter
Shea butter is valued for its creamy texture. It helps create a hard, long-lasting bar.
Sweet Almond Oil
Sweet almond oil is a lightweight oil rich in fatty acids and vitamin E. It is widely used in skincare to help soften and nourish the skin. It forms part of our original soap base recipe and is also used in many of our skincare products, so it is present in most of our range.
Rice Bran Oil
Rice bran oil is used in a couple of our soap bars in place of sweet almond oil. It's also used in our skin balm and body oil. Rice bran oil is high in antioxidants with great skin-softening properties.
Castor Oil
Castor oil helps to create a rich, stable and creamy lather. It helps draw moisture to the skin, contributing to a conditioning bar.
Sodium Hydroxide (Lye)
Sodium hydroxide is an essential ingredient used in traditional soapmaking. It reacts with oils during the soapmaking process in a reaction called saponification, creating soap and glycerin. By the time the soap has cured, the sodium hydroxide has been fully used up in the soapmaking process and does not remain in the finished bar.
Water
Water is used during the soapmaking process to dissolve the lye and combine it with the oils. During the curing period much of the water slowly evaporates, helping to create a harder, longer-lasting bar of soap.
Clays and Natural Additions
Natural Clays
Clays such as kaolin or coloured clays are sometimes used to give soap its natural colour and to add a silky feel to the lather.
Botanicals and Sea Salt
Some soaps contain natural additions such as sea salt or plant-based ingredients which add texture and interest to the finished bar.
Essential Oils
All soaps - apart from our Plain soap - are scented using pure essential oils derived from plants, flowers, herbs and citrus fruits. These give each soap its distinctive natural fragrance.
Examples include:
Lavender
A fresh floral fragrance with soft woody undertones.
Used in our Lavender and Patchouli soaps (Exfoliating) and (Smooth).
Patchouli
An earthy, musky fragrance used in our Purple Patchouli soap.
Geranium
A sweet floral fragrance with herbal undertones, present in our Geranium soap.
Citrus Oils
Bright, uplifting fragrances found in our Orange and Clary Sage soap and our Lemon soap.
Colour
The colours in our soaps come from natural clays and botanicals, giving each bar its natural appearance.
Botanical Oils and Butters (Skincare)
Mango Butter
A rich, nourishing butter used in some of our skincare products to help soften and protect the skin.
Jojoba Oil
A lightweight oil that closely resembles the skin’s natural oils, helping to moisturise without feeling greasy.
Vitamin E
Used in small amounts as an antioxidant to help support the stability of oils in skincare formulations.
A Note on Allergies
All ingredients are listed on each product label using their INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) names, along with any fragrance allergens required by UK cosmetic regulations.
If you have allergies or very sensitive skin, please review the ingredient list carefully and consider carrying out a patch test before use.
A Note on Palm Oil
Our soaps are made without palm oil.
Some of the functional ingredients used in our haircare and skincare products are derived from vegetable fatty acids, which may include palm-derived ingredients. Where they are used, we aim to source them responsibly through our suppliers.
Handmade in Small Batches
All soaps are made by hand in small batches using the traditional cold-process soapmaking method, allowing the oils and ingredients to create a gentle, long-lasting bar.
Sustainability
We aim to choose ingredients and packaging with care, sourcing materials through established cosmetic suppliers and prioritising responsibly sourced ingredients where possible. Our products are made in small batches so we can keep ingredients fresh and avoid over-producing.
We aim to keep packaging simple and recyclable where possible.
Natural and Vegan-Friendly
Our products are made using plant oils, butters and botanicals, with small amounts of carefully selected cosmetic ingredients where needed for stability and performance.
All products are vegan-friendly and never tested on animals.
